Punnet squares
Punnett squares are tools that help us to understand how traits are passed on from parents to offspring. Here are some important terms to know in order to understand Punnett squares:
- Allele: A version of a gene. We get one allele from our mom and one from our dad.
- Dominant allele: A gene that will be expressed over a recessive allele. Represented by a capital letter.
- Recessive allele: A gene that will be hidden by a dominant allele. Represented by a capital letter.
- Genotype: Two letters that represent the two genes that an organism has for a certain trait.
- Phenotype: The physical trait that is expressed.
- Hybrid or heterozygous: A genotype where the two genes are different from each other (Example: Hh)
- Purebred or homozygous: A genotype where the two genes are the same (Example: HH or hh)
