Mastery Check #4 - Waves
Waves Transfer Energy
Waves are all around us and can be made my many different mediums. The picture to the left shows an ocean wave traveling through the water. Waves transfer energy. The energy of the waves can do damage to things when it hits them. The energy of the waves also lifts up heavy objects floating in the water. For example, there are large boats that weigh millions of tons and waves have enough energy to lift those heavy boats up several meters at times. All waves are like this and they carry energy and have the potential to do work. |
Amplitude and its Effects on Wave Energy
The higher the amplitude of an ocean wave for example, the higher it will lift the objects floating on the water. This is a good way to visualize the energy of a wave. The higher the amplitude, the more work it will do because it has the energy to lift things higher. The picture to the right shows a boat going over a wave. Notice that the boat has some vertical position to the water below it. It has the potential to fall and it got that gravitational potential energy from the energy of the waves The same principles are true for light and sound. The higher the amplitude of a particular wave, the more energy that wave carries. |
Sound Amplitude
The picture to the left shows 2 sound waves of different volumes. The sound that is louder will have a higher amplitude but the wavelength and frequency will not be changed. When you turn up the sound on your headphones, the sound has a higher amplitude which means you hear a louder sound. |
