Mastery Check #4 - Genetic Technologies
Humans can change the genetics of plants and animals in a number of ways. Here are a two examples:
|
Examples of selective breeding
- Genetic modification - This is when humans insert a desirable gene from one organism into another so that it will also have that desirable trait. Genetic modification has a number of benefits and risks. To read more about the benefits, risks, and the process of genetically modified foods, look at this website: Genetic science learning center.
- Benefits - Genetic modification is much faster, easier, and cheeper than selective breeding.
- Risks - Plants and animals that have been genetically modified could cause damage to an ecosystem. They could also cause allergic reactions to humans eating them.
